Jasmin Alić: We build relationships on LinkedIn, so take the first step. Be visible.

LinkedIn already has over a billion users, and if we want to stand out, be visible, and achieve our goals, we must take steps in that direction. We buy from people. It’s as simple as that. LinkedIn gives us the power to directly contact CEOs of large companies with whom we want to collaborate. This isn’t a formal email—it can be a simple message to which the recipient casually responds on the same day.

LinkedIn Is No Longer a Virtual CV, but a Magnet

The days when we used LinkedIn merely as a corner of a virtual CV to apply for jobs are over. There was a time when we sought out people, potential clients, and heads of HR departments to introduce ourselves, ask for employment, show why collaborating with us is beneficial, and so on. Today, the game is entirely different.

People come to us because we attract them with:

  1. An organized and optimized profile that is focused on our goal (especially important are the headline, cover photo, the "About" section, and experiences).
  2. Sharing posts that represent us, solve problems, educate, and showcase the service we want to sell.
  3. Sharing opinions, commenting, and sparking debates that unfold in the comments on our posts or on posts by others.

In Focus: Posts Put You at the Top of People’s Minds

LinkedIn is a social network that favors sharing content and expertise. When our ideas go out into the world, the algorithm shows them to our network. If people interact with them, they are then shown to their connections as well, triggering a wave of reactions. How will people think of you when they need the service you offer if you are not top-of-mind?

Appearance Is Key

Regularly produce content that not only showcases your expertise, but also resonates with your audience and adds value to them. It is essential that you are the first person people think of when they need solutions in your field.

Consistently Share Your Posts

Consistent posting does not mean posting every day; it means having a schedule. It is important to post when it suits you and when you are capable. The LinkedIn algorithm will remember you and expect you. Don’t forget to comment on other posts and respond to comments, which will prove that you are present, sparking debates and sharing knowledge.

In Focus: Sharing Your Credentials

Tell your story, list the companies you have collaborated with. All of this counts towards your authority. Every post is proof that you master your field. Every piece of content you share is evidence of your knowledge and skills. It is not enough to merely claim that you are proficient in your work. Demonstrate it with your words and actions.

In Focus: Engagement Through Comments

Engagement—active participation and involvement on the network—leads to meaningful relationships. One of the biggest mistakes users make when trying to create new opportunities, sales calls, and acquire new clients is failing to build active relationships.

Looking closer:

  • Commenting on others’ posts brings exposure and authority.
  • Responding to comments on your own posts increases the reach and effectiveness of your posts. Networking with others expands your network.
  • Sending private messages to strengthen relationships creates opportunities, sales, and friendships.

Are You Being Authentic?

Authentic engagement helps create a sense of community around your brand, leading to greater engagement and customer loyalty. Key tips include:

  • Know your audience: Understanding your target audience is crucial for creating content that resonates with them.
  • Be genuine: Authentic engagement requires you to be sincere and genuine. Avoid gimmicks and stay true to the values and personality of your brand.
  • Two-way communication: Encourage feedback and respond to comments and messages. Make your audience feel heard and valued.
  • Show your personality: Don’t be afraid to incorporate humor or personality into your content. This helps make your brand more relatable and engaging.
  • Be transparent: Be open and honest about your practices and values.

Jasmin’s Commenting Strategy

  1. Never comment just for the author of the post—comment for everyone reading it.

Comments like “congrats,” “great post,” and “I completely agree, thanks for sharing” do not add value. Share comments that enhance your credibility and authority. In doing so, you indirectly spark debates. More comments on your post mean greater visibility, which is crucial on crowded social networks where attention is hard to come by.

  1. Don’t forget to comment on your own post.

These are the comments you write on your own post. Many people are hesitant to comment—they seek confirmation that they can, or they look for additional starting points for conversation. This is where your own comments come into play, further encouraging others to comment and sparking a debate. Jasmin suggests 3-7 such comments to nurture a genuine community. Each comment acts as a magnet for potential clients. Make sure your magnet has some appeal.

  1. Comment strategically.

Don’t comment “to everyone”—focus your interactions on your target audience. Direct your engagement: 50% towards your ideal client profile, 30% towards the industry and competitors, and 20% towards industry leaders and thought leaders. Prepare a list of people you want to engage with and monitor them regularly. Set notifications for your target individuals so you are alerted when they post. Use filters to make them easier to find.

What Is LinkedIn’s Purpose?

Be good people. Care for others. Be authentic. Enjoy what you do and stay engaged. This is how you build real relationships on LinkedIn and achieve your goals.
