Building a Quality LinkedIn Network: Highlights from Nejc Jamšček’s Lecture

One year is a very short time… Or is it? In one year, our LinkedIn journey can completely change. Nejc Jamšček is proof that decisions we persistently stick to pay off. In just one year, he went from being passively present in the digital world to building such a strong presence that on May 22 he delivered his first live presentation on his LinkedIn successes at the Mighty Sales event!

The Path to Success on LinkedIn

Nejc’s journey on LinkedIn began from a desire to transform his career path. The idea of working from anywhere in the world, with just a computer, attracted him and set him on his digital journey. After leaving the military and working as a freelancer, he recognized the importance of building a personal brand and positioning himself in the digital world.

In February 2023, he made a commitment to post useful LinkedIn content every day for the next year. With this “experiment,” he grew his audience from 200 to nearly 11,500 followers—in just one year. Dedication, consistency, and sharing knowledge laid the foundation for his success.

"Collecting ideas on the go"

What is the biggest challenge in posting regularly and writing posts?

Inspiration

We all agree on the importance of regularly posting content on social media. Yet what do you do when you simply lack inspiration for a post? When you know you need to post, but have no idea what to post or how to write the description? How do you ensure that your posts always carry added value and are engaging enough for users to follow you consistently?

We all face such questions, even well-known LinkedIn personalities. One of them is Nejc, who during his presentation advised not to limit inspiration solely to the work environment. The best ideas come when you least expect them. When your mind is relaxed, you have better access to your creative side. Whether it’s during a sports activity, cooking, or anywhere else, jot down your ideas. Of course, this doesn’t mean you dedicate entire days to work; by writing down an idea, you make it easier for yourself when it’s time to work. Ideas will remain fresh and unforced, which helps ensure that your posts are of higher quality.

In addition to quality, it’s important to maintain a consistent thread in your posts. Your posts should focus on various topics that together connect into one larger, comprehensive theme that runs through your entire profile.

But what else, besides constant posting and quality, is important in posts?

Originality

There’s a lot of talk these days about the authenticity of posts on social media. How can we ensure that our posts are both original and authentic, yet still offer added value to our readers? Nejc believes that the goal is not just what we post or write, but how we deliver our knowledge and experiences to our readers. By maintaining a consistent, genuine manner of expression throughout all our posts, our content will come across as both authentic and original—and we will be seen as trustworthy. This style of writing and expression will inspire trust in us and, ultimately, in our services.

With all the talk about originality and authenticity, we must also address the issue of what to do when you’ve been using your profile for years. We often have posts on most topics, yet there aren’t always new topics to write about. Many authors repurpose their previous posts. When a post “ages” on your profile, there’s little chance that new followers will see it. If it’s still a relevant topic, it makes perfect sense to republish the post—but in a different way. Perhaps over time you’ve gained a new perspective on what you wrote? Maybe it would be wise to change the way you write the post? Recently, we’ve seen a rise in video content on social media. Could you transform your old post, which contained a long description and images, into a video where you present the same topic in a more attractive way? The answer is, yes! Relevant topics are always worth writing about. This doesn’t mean that posts shouldn’t be repeated or given a new perspective simply because you’ve written about them before. Nejc, who advocates repurposing old posts, uses this strategy frequently. It has proven extremely effective, and he encourages others to adopt a similar approach.

Clear Goals

Before we even start posting content on LinkedIn, before setting up optimizations and strategies, the most important step is defining our goals. Throughout the posting process, it’s essential to have a clear objective—what do we want to achieve with these posts?

If our goals aren’t clearly defined, we won’t be able to achieve results. Posts made just for the sake of posting don’t benefit anyone, even if their performance is good, if they ultimately yield nothing for us. Defining what the first milestone is—be it a number of followers, new contacts, or something else—is an important initial benchmark to know that our efforts are paying off and that we are moving toward our long-term goals.

Key Principles of Effective Networking

1. Personalization Is Key

Nejc emphasized that LinkedIn connection requests must be personal and tailored to the recipient. Generic messages are easily ignored, whereas a message that reflects the specific interests and needs of the person is much more likely to receive a response and a connection. Personalization shows that you value the person you want to connect with and that you have taken the time to review and understand their profile and interests.

2. Narrow Focus

When building your network, a narrow focus is more effective than trying to connect with everyone. What’s key? Not trying to please all. Nejc began his journey with a different mentality and practical steps, through which he identified the audiences relevant to his services. The key is to identify the specific audience that is relevant to you and your service, and then craft messages that directly address them. This approach not only improves response rates but also helps build a network of contacts that are more relevant and valuable.

3. Consistency and Patience

Building a quality network doesn’t happen overnight. It requires consistent effort and patience. Nejc’s own experience of posting content every day for 365 days is a testament to the power of consistency. Regular, high-quality posts keep you visible and relevant in your network’s news feed, increasing the opportunities for meaningful connections.

The Importance of Visibility

Despite regular and consistent posting, Nejc didn’t have immediate success. Over the first few months, he learned that no matter how regular and informative his posts were, it was crucial to master the LinkedIn algorithm. From his own experience, real results on his personal profile only began to show after he started engaging with other posts. A lot of commenting, sharing his opinions, and interacting with others’ posts allows the LinkedIn algorithm to recognize and “tag” you as someone whose posts are valuable, thereby displaying them more prominently to your followers.

Tips for Creating Content

Document Your Experiences: Share your lessons, mistakes, and stories. Authentic content drawn from personal experiences resonates more with the audience and produces better results. Your community will connect with you through these personal stories and will be more inclined to follow you, knowing there’s a genuine person behind the profile.

Feedback Loops: Write, test, gather feedback, analyze, and adjust. This process helps refine your content and increase its impact.

Clarity and Structure: Have a clear goal for your content and organize it well. This helps maintain consistency and ensures that your message is understood.

Building Relationships

Networking isn’t just about posting content—it’s also about engaging with your network. The LinkedIn algorithm is unique, and to succeed, you must understand it. Nejc confirmed the importance of commenting on posts, as well as responding and engaging in private messages. These interactions build relationships and strengthen your network, making it more engaged. It’s not just about good LinkedIn results; through conversations and interactions with your followers, you build a diverse network of individuals from various fields.

Conclusion

The lecture was focused on using the LinkedIn platform for personal growth and recognition in professional circles. Emphasizing personalized, targeted, and consistent connections along with authentic content creation provides a clear roadmap for anyone looking to build a quality network on LinkedIn. By following these principles, you will increase your visibility, foster meaningful connections, and achieve your career goals. Change doesn’t happen overnight, so the key to success remains consistency. Follow like-minded individuals, and when you lack inspiration for a new post, look for it within your community. Sharing common themes will also help you develop more quality and authentic relationships.
